Baptism

Children who have received the Sacrament of Holy Baptism at Zion Lutheran Church are placed under the spiritual care of this congregation shall be considered baptized members. Children who have been baptized by another Christian church through water and the Word in the name of the Triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit and who personally or through their guardian, express the desire to be members of this congregation shall be considered baptized members.

Baptism at Zion Lutheran Church
We believe that the Bible teaches that a person is saved by God’s grace alone through faith in Jesus Christ alone. The Bible tells us that such “faith comes by hearing.”
Jesus Himself commands Baptism and tells us that Baptism is water used together with the Word of God.

Because of this we believe that Baptism is one of the miraculous means of grace, another is God’s Word as it is written or spoken, through which God creates and/or strengthens the gift of faith in a person’s heart.

We do not believe that only those baptized as infants receive faith. Faith can also be created in a person’s heart by the power of the Holy Spirit working through God’s Word. Baptism should then soon follow after this change for the purpose of confirming and strengthening faith in accordance with God’s command and promise. Depending on the situation, we baptize people of all ages from infants through adulthood.

Who can be godparents or sponsors and why?
Sponsors witness those who receive this sacrament have been properly baptized. They also pray for them and in the case of children, help them with their Christian upbringing especially if they should lose their parents.

It is suggested that the sponsors be of the same faith. One of the reasons for this practice is it avoids putting family members or friends who belong to churches of a different confession in a difficult or compromising situation, where they would be asked to take vows that they may not be able to carry out in good conscience.
We receive requests from non-members as well as members for services such as Baptisms of children and adults, weddings, and funerals. These requests are at the discretion of the pastor.

If you are not presently a member of Zion Lutheran Church we would invite you to visit one of our church services, where you will be welcomed and meet other members. If you are interested in becoming a member of Zion we encourage you to enroll in a new member class.
Contact the Church Office or the Pastor of Zion if you are interested having a member of your family baptized
